Job Description
Primary Purpose:
The Coordinator of the Whole Child provides unique services to children, youth, and their families to help the students attain maximum benefits from their school programs. School social workers have knowledge and a concern for the wide range of social, emotional, cultural, and economic differences among children, families, and communities. The Coordinator is responsible for Foster Care, supervising the McKinney-Vento program, Pregnancy- Related Services, and General Education Homebound program for students in Pregnancy-Related Services, and the supervision/training of the homebound teachers. The coordinator develops partnerships and collaborative efforts to ensure programs and services maximize the use and effectiveness of program elements and personnel for the benefit of all scholars and families.
Education/Certification
Must be a licensed Social Worker, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Clinical Degree
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Must be familiar with the community and support agencies
- Must be adaptable to meet the needs of the families in the program in addition to working flexible hours to accommodate work in the evening
- Preferred– ability to communicate in the native language(s) of program recipients
- Experience working with families that have diverse cultures and economic backgrounds
- General knowledge of Academics, Behavior, and Attendance Supports
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, able to work in collaborative team-based environments
- Experience working in an educational, social service, or family support service setting
- Experience with child development
- Knowledge of individual and group counseling skills
- Knowledge and skill in casework methods
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, and students
Experience:
Must have 3-5 years of experience working with youth, families, schools, and/or community outreach and at risk youth
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide case management services to elementary – high school students who have been identified as having chronic school absences, behavior problems, or other barriers to learning
- Consult with administrative and instructional staff
- Support campus/district goals of prevention to maintain a healthy and safe school environment
- Coordinates the Pregnancy Related Services program and provides case management services
- Coordinates the General Education Homebound program for students in Pregnancy Related Services
- Coordinate the Foster Care Program and provide case management services
- Support and supervise McKinney-Vento Liaison
- Compile budget and cost estimates based on documented program needs
- Coordinate a continuing evaluation of PRS, Foster Care, and McKinney-Vento services and make changes as needed, based on the findings
- Coordinate holiday support for families
- Coordinate district-wide events for Whole Child such as the annual school resource fair
- Coordinate partnership with Assistance League of Austin to assist with uniform and/or clothing distribution as well as Operation School Bell
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board policy
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations
- Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment
- Assess family needs and make home visits as needed
- Coordinate the Department’s resource referral process, which can be used to assist children and families from each school
- Assist the Department in continuing on-going case management documentation
- Assist the Department in providing crisis intervention as needed
- Notify appropriate agencies when abuse or neglect is suspected
- Refer school staff and parents to resources in the community
- Assist in the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities and parent training and support groups
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisor and colleagues
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents
- Maintain confidentiality
- Dependable performance requires dependable attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise the McKinney-Vento Staff, Pregnancy Related Services Homebound Teachers and Interns

Daily attendance and punctuality at work on time every day are essential functions of the job. Work successfully with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress. Repetitive hand motions; daily lifting/carrying of 5-50 lbs., and exerting up to 20 lbs of force to move objects. Prolonged and irregular hours including multiple evenings and occasional Saturday hours. The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail. There are several deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress. The employee must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues. Occasional travel. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data and assist with coordination of events.
