Micro Driver – Bus Driver in Training

Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Under direct supervision, transport 14 or fewer individuals to and from school-related activities or events until successful completion of CDL with school bus endorsement. Candidates who apply for the Micro-Driver – Bus Driver in Training position intend to obtain the appropriate licensure to drive a school bus. Candidates must obtain the appropriate licensure within the district allotted time frame.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas driver’s license (Class C)

 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedure
  • Ability to operate micro bus/white fleet

Experience:     

None required.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Follow assigned directions and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive micro bus to and from school related activities.
  • Obtain CDL with bus driver endorsement within the district allotted time frame
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  • Keep records of mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Keep assigned vehicle clean and fueled.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the vehicle and cross the street.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrators.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for passenger vehicle.
  • Inspect micro bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure vehicle can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of all applicable emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the road.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Report to work in a timely manner according to assigned schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
  • Class C License 20-hour School Bus Certification if applicable.
  • Operation of 2-way radios, and e-mail
  • Other duties as assigned
