Job Description
Primary Purpose:
The School Health Assistant performs basic patient care activities for students, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or Equivalent is required
- Current Basic Life Support for healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) course completion card from the American Heart Association is required prior to hire or job transfer date
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Ability to use personal computer and software to develop databases and do word processing
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
- Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Experience:
At least 6 months of medical field is required
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs basic monitoring of students including vital signs, weight and height. Also conducts state mandated screenings such as vision and hearing.
- Assists with medication administration under appropriate clinical guidelines
- Documents data for review by Registered Nurse (RN)
- Performs basic clerical functions
- Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly environment, and orders/stocks supplies.
- Reviews monthly immunization reports and sends out letter to students needing immunizations
- Enters screening results and immunization data for students in electronic system. Completes incident and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports as needed.
- Records medications received, administered and sent home with a student
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- May be required to be “on-call”
