Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The School Health Assistant performs basic patient care activities for students, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).

 

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or Equivalent is required
  • Current Basic Life Support for healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) course completion card from the American Heart Association is required prior to hire or job transfer date

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Ability to use personal computer and software to develop databases and do word processing
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills

Experience:

At least 6 months of medical field is required

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs basic monitoring of students including vital signs, weight and height. Also conducts state mandated screenings such as vision and hearing.
  • Assists with medication administration under appropriate clinical guidelines
  • Documents data for review by Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Performs basic clerical functions
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly environment, and orders/stocks supplies.
  • Reviews monthly immunization reports and sends out letter to students needing immunizations
  • Enters screening results and immunization data for students in electronic system. Completes incident and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports as needed.
  • Records medications received, administered and sent home with a student
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to be “on-call”

Blood Pressure Equipment, Ophthalmoscope (vision), Audiometer (hearing), Glucometer, Pulse Oximeter, AED
