This position is for a Bus Operator / Shop Worker in the LGISD Transportation Department. Seeking applicants who will ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. As a Bus Operator you will learn to drive a school bus (&/or a white fleet vehicle) that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. As a Bus Shop Worker you will be tasked with ensuring the safe and reliable operation of district school buses, other district vehicles and equipment by performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs.
Education/Certification: Clear and valid Texas commercial driver?s license w/ Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or willing and able to obtain a clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license w/ Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Special Knowledge/Skills: Must be 18 years of age Have a HS Diploma or GED Experience preferred in driving a bus, automotive repairs and parts management Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to follow routes and locate addresses Ability to manage student behaviors Ability to communicate effectively with others district/campus personnel, parents and students Ability to operate bus (&/or white fleet vehicles, shop equipment, etc…)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Mechanical Perform skilled motor vehicle, automotive, bus repairs and preventative maintenance work. Perform mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. Ensure shop equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
Vehicle Operation Drive a bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities. Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure the bus can be operated safely and notify the supervisor of needed repairs. Keep the assigned bus clean and maintain an appropriate level of fuel. Ensure the bus is disinfected according to the latest school guidelines. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
Student Management Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students. Report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student?s behavior when warranted. Perform emergency evacuation of students on the bus when the situation warrants. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along the scheduled route. Maintain safety certification(s).
Other Operate and maintain on board routing and student management devices. Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation dispatch office and other drivers. Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. Other duties as assigned.
